Sydney Walter Martin "Marten" Cumberland〔"Merchant Navy Seamen 1835-1941" index and images, findmypast (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KC7R-9J6: 1 April 2015); citing BT 112-116, 119-120, series BT350, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey.〕 (23 July 1892, London – 1972, Dublin) was a British journalist, novelist and editor. He also wrote under the pseudonym, Kevin O'Hara. He specialised in the detective/mystery genre and created the character of Inspector Saturnin Dax, a French policeman. During World War I, he served as a radio operator in the Merchant Marine. After the war, he worked successively for several newspapers and publishing houses as a writer. He also composed some detective stories for various magazines. He became a freelance journalist in 1924. In 1923, he published his first novel, ''Loaded Dice'', which he cowrote with B.V. Shann. He married Kathleen Walsh in 1928.
